January 23 – Rev. Joan Shiels

Rev. Joan Shiels

THE SWEETNESS OF SILENCE

Thoreau said “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation.” These days, we would have to say “Most men lead lives of noisy desperation.” Silence has a profound impact on the way we think, our daily actions and our relationships. An appreciation of silence and a reflection on how the lack of silence in our noisy world is damaging the quality of our lives and, surprisingly, the environment.

If you know Joan Shiels you probably think she talks a lot. And she does. But with a 30-year practice of keeping silent one day a week, she is a great lover of both solitude and silence.
