March 6 – Kärin Kopischke

FINDING DOOR COUNTY’S FOUNDING MOTHERS

March is Women’s History Month, which often prompts reflections on famous women, but it is also a time to celebrate the lives of obscure women who were remarkable in their own right. Kärin Kopischke reflects on the inspiring Door County women she found while researching “Garments of Our Foundation” that had been omitted from local history books, but who deserve to be honored and remembered.

Kärin is an artist and costume designer. Her extensively researched exhibit, Garments of Our Foundation, has been seen in several galleries around the county. The exhibit depicts founding mothers of Gibraltar in clothing appropriate to their circumstances and time period. Ephraim is the next to be explored and other Door County communities are in the planning stages.
