On July 6, starting a 1:30 pm, members of the UU Book Club will meet to discuss Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. The book , by the husband-wife team of Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, argues that the oppression of women worldwide is “the paramount moral challenge” of the present era, much as the fight against slavery was in the past (Wikipedia). It discusses sex trafficking, maternal mortality, sexual violence, and argues for microfinance and girls education. The book critic for the Washington Post called this “one of the most important books I have ever reviewed.”
The meeting will be hosted and moderated by Karen Cruz and Jami Hanreddy at Jami’s home. Members will be reminded by Jamie closer to the event. Her email is hanreddy@uwm.edu, her phone is 920-854-6387.
In August we will be reading Mud Bound by Hilary Jordan. More information will come later.
