Dickinson Poetry Series: Nancy Rafal

Nancy Rafal

Door County published poet Nancy Rafal, Baileys Harbor, will present a sampling of her poetry June 13 at 7 pm.

Recently Nancy embarked upon a publishing venture with her friend, Henry Timm.  N.E.W. Voices is a twice-yearly literary platform for writers in northeast Wisconsin.

Nancy’s work can be found in the 2013 Wisconsin Poets’ Calendar and in past issues.  Nancy and Kathy Miner were co-editors of the 2009 edition.  Along with Judy Roy and June Nirschl, Nancy produced Slightly Off Q, a 2004 sell-out chapbook.  Her work has also appeared in the Peninsula Pulse. For the past three years Nancy’s contribution to the Hardy Gallery Community Mosaic Project has included her poetry.

The Newport Poetry Trail exhibits are tended by Nancy.  Nancy performs with the Fish Tail Players, an offshoot of the Northern Door Storytellers Guild.  She also performs with the guild in presentations about the Memorial Pole in Peninsula State Park.

When not creating with words, Nancy is involved with a wide range of activities.  She is an active chair caner and is planning the national gathering of the SeatWeavers’ Guild this August at Old World Wisconsin in Eagle.  She and Francha Barnard head up the Baileys Harbor Community Mural project taking shape on the north wall of Nelson’s Hardware.  The mural’s artist, Ram Rojas, will create a visual treat celebrating Baileys Harbor notable sights and the poetry of Lorine Niedecker.

You can find Nancy at most Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets conferences.  She steps down as treasurer of that organization at the end of the year after holding the post for more than six years.  She is also a regional representative for the Wisconsin Writers Association and a member of the board of the Friends of Lorine Niedecker.
