March 17 – Rev. Phil Sweet

Rev. Phil Sweet

GOD BLESS THE IRISH

A number of years ago Thomas Cahill wrote a book entitled “How the Irish Saved Civilization”. He begins the book with a negative observation: When we think of people as civilized, the Egyptians, and the Greeks, the Italians and the French, the Chinese and the Jews may come to mind, the Irish are wild, feckless, and charming, or morose, repressed, and corrupt, but not especially civilized. Sigmund Freud said the Irish were the only race on which psychotherapy would not work. So how did the Irish save civilization?

Phil Sweet is a long-time friend of UUFDC, and a marvelous and insightful story-teller. He served as minister of Hope Church in Sturgeon Bay and two rural churches in western Minnesota.
