PRACTICING YOUR OWN RELIGION

Religion at its best is always revolutionary and dangerous. We have too long been accustomed to the idea that religion should be solacing and comforting. Fundamentally religion has never been that, certainly not in its classic periods or at its heights. It has been disturbing. Its primary function is to keep us awake. But it has to be our own religion. Its principle ingredient is heresy.

Phil Sweet is a long-time friend of UUFDC, and a marvelous and insightful story-teller. He served as minister of Hope Church in Sturgeon Bay and two rural churches in western Minnesota.
