SELF-COMPASSION REVISITED
Research shows that self-compassion, a core idea of Buddhist practice, is a better predictor of mental health than self-esteem. Last December Doc presented an overview of self-compassion. This time, we’ll take another look at this powerful concept and how it can help us in the coming year.
Frederick “Doc” Heide is associate professor at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University, where he teaches courses on mindfulness and various forms of psychotherapy. He has published in such journals as Psychophysiology, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Journal of Psychotherapy Integration, and Behaviour Research and Therapy. He’s also associate editor of APA’s online journal PsycCRITIQUES. A co-founder of Door County’s American Folklore Theatre, Doc has created or co-created 20 shows including Belgians in Heaven, Packer Fans from Outer Space, and Guys & Does. He’s appeared onstage under the stars almost every summer since 1973.
