The Metaphor of God

We begin with the mystery of our existence, and then we ask ourselves a set of questions: What is going on? Why are we doing this? Why are things so difficult? We find metaphors to tell us who we think we are and why we are doing this, like the metaphor of God. “Half the people in the world think that the metaphors of their religious tradition are facts. And the other half contends that they are not facts at all. As a result we have people who consider themselves believers because they accept metaphors as facts, and we have others who classify themselves as atheists because they think religious metaphors are lies.”(Joseph Campbell)

David Clowers moved to Door County in 2001 where he practices law, writes poetry and performs in various theatrical endeavors. He is a member of UUFDC and serves as Treasurer of the Governing Board.
