Breaking our “mind forged manacles” in an age of global violence
The violence and disorder that rages around the world today is a sign that we are in a period where the global system is breaking down. Our participation in finding a path forward can’t be limited by “mind forged manacles” that define practicality in terms of prevailing definitions of “common sense.” How can we find a path toward a new society in which the needs, capacity, and enjoyment of life is the true definition of value – the point of society itself?
David Ranney is Professor Emeritus in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois Chicago. His latest book, New World Disorder, was released in 2014. He splits his time between Chicago, Illinois and Washington Island, Wisconsin.
