Kristi Roenning is a Door County artist who makes art in her rural Sturgeon Bay studio. She taught in Wisconsin schools for eighteen years and in 1992 was named Wisconsin Art Educator of the Year. Roenning also served as Instructor of Art Education at Lawrence University.
The Essentials exhibit will include works on paper using ink and watercolor pencil to explore shadow, as well as works using cold wax and oil, a medium that allows for the layering and manipulation of paint. Her work reflects both the rural landscape that surrounds her and her internal “landscape” in more abstract work.
Roenning works in series to express the impulse to reach the essential quality or truth of an object, space or idea. She refers to her process of painting in cold wax and oil (moving, mixing, scratching, rolling, blotting) as “an act of faith” that the clouds will part and she will be able to find that essence even when it seems lost along the way.
Roenning’s paintings can be seen at Woodwalk Gallery in Egg Harbor. They have appeared in local, state and national juried exhibits and invitationals and are part of private and public collections. Since moving to Door County, Roenning continues to teach through retreats, workshops and lectures designed to reunite participants with their creative selves.
