UUFDC Social Justice Scholarship Awarded

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County (UUFDC) is proud to announce that the recipient of the 2018 UUFDC $1000 Social Justice Scholarship is Ms. Korrina Ervin, a senior from Washington Island High School. Ms. Ervin was selected in recognition of her deep commitment to social justice both in her personal life and in her community. In her dedication at home as a caregiver to family members and in her leadership on the school student council and in the Washington Island community, Ms. Ervin exemplifies the commitment to social justice reflected in the founding principles of Unitarian Universalism. As the Unitarian Universalist Association website explains,

“Justice is at the core of our faith. Our congregations are called to make a positive difference in our wider communities. We work to serve, to raise awareness, and to support and partner with people who face injustice. We advocate, organize, and act for justice to live out the values of our faith.” (www.uua.org/justice-programs)

Ms. Ervin’s future plans are to attend the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire to major in social work with an emphasis on gerontology. Her belief that “nothing substitutes for the personal responsibility of each of us to practice social justice in our relationships with one another” is a goal to which we can all aspire.

The UUFDC Social Justice Scholarship is awarded to a local graduating senior who exemplifies a commitment to social justice. It was open this year to students from Gibraltar, Sevastopol, and Washington Island school districts – as well as to homeschooled students.

Through this scholarship, UUFDC encourages local students of any faith – or no faith – to persevere in the struggle for social justice, wherever and whenever they find it.

Congratulations, Ms. Korrina Ervin!
