On April 17, the Sunday collection is for the Third Annual UUFDC Scholarship.  This scholarship is awarded to an area youth that embraces the principles of social justice in spirit and in action.  This initiative is spearheaded by the UUFDC Social Responsibility Committee and provides a way for our fellowship to become more visible locally and to encourage our local youth to embrace one of the basic principles of Unitarian Universalism–justice.

In its first two years applications were limited to students at Gibraltar High School.  This year it was decided to expand to include not only Gibraltar High School but Washington Island High School as well as Sevastopol.  This helps us reach out to a broader base of our community.

Applicants are asked to provide specific identifying information including their GPA and then write 2 essays.  One essay is to explain their own perspective of what social justice means to them and the second essay is to describe their personal experience or involvement in social justice activities.  Lastly, applicants must submit one letter of recommendation from a non-family member.

This scholarship is awarded in the amount of $1,000.00 and is given for the applicant’s second semester of college which helps insure the applicant’s likelihood of success and the deeper impact of our support.  We hope you will generously support this initiative and help us reach our goal of $1,000.00 so that we as a community may put our principles into action on a local level.  Our scholarship initiative not only helps a local student but we will reap the benefit far in the future as the ripple effect reaches out to the larger world.
