Stephen Wysocki lives and works on his family’s bison ranch in Armstrong Creek, WI, where he paints in acrylic and oil to convey the beauty he sees there every day in the fields or on the roads. He gravitates toward “ordinary structures or roadside junk, rusty and for sale,” expressing his joy in their hard edges and contrasts through the hues and shadows of paint. He seeks to create an atmosphere or a mood by playing with the warm and cool tones of color and by texturing his canvases, discovering a story as he works. Rather than focusing on details, he likes his oils to appear loose, “wet on wet,” as if they had just been finished a few minutes or hours ago.

Stephen studied art at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Nicolet College in Rhinelander, the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and in England, earning a Bachelor of Arts at UWGB in 1997, but he left city life as quickly as possible for what he calls “the Northwoods.” His work is in in the permanent collection of University of Wisconsin Green Bay, and in Bay College, Iron Mountain, MI. It can also be seen on his website,
