Carol Schalla’s favorite medium has always been pastel because of its intense color and immediacy. Beginning with a sketch or a photo, she interprets the effect of light on the spectrum of colors within her subjects. Her paintings range from softly representational landscapes to soulful animals. Each painting is created on archival sanded pastel paper which is specifically made for grabbing onto the small particles of pure pigment that make pastel paintings so luminous.
Originally from the Chicago suburbs where she raised her family, Carol Schalla culminated a 25-year career in the home decorating field as the Senior Home Editor of Midwest Living Magazine in Des Moines, IA. In her 12 years there she received media recognition for interior designing numerous magazine show homes, and, thus, was chosen as one of three judges for the prestigious Des Moines Art Festival in 2011 for her combined design skills and artistic “eye.”
Her interest in Door County was fueled by trips for Midwest Living. Upon her retirement in 2013, she moved to Door County, designing and building her own home. Having found that her artistic talent helped immeasurably in her interior design career, she now finds that many design precepts apply in her art. Mostly self-taught as an artist, she has been juried into The Hardy, chosen for the Miller’s Emerging Artist booth at last year’s Sturgeon Bay Art Fest, and continues to augment her skills with yearly pastel workshops at the Peninsula School of Art.
Carol is a past member of the Door County Art League and Gallery, and is currently a docent and a member of the Board of Directors of The Francis Hardy Center for the Arts in Ephraim, where she resides.
