UU Gallery Presents: Textiles with Text by Alison Gates: Following Twisted Paths

Showing Dates: June 30 – July 28, 2019

Alison Gates holds a BA and a BFA from Western Washington University and an MFA in Studio Fibers from the University of Washington. She came to Wisconsin in 2001 to teach Fibers in the Art Program at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. She joined the Women’s Studies faculty there in 2007 shortly after earning tenure. Currently a resident of Appleton, she writes reviews and articles for publications such as Surface Design Journal in addition to maintaining her art studio practice and teaching at UWGB full time.

Alison is interested in the interplay of words and images in contemporary society and how that interplay relates historically to subversive messages women were known to pass to one another through stitching (the “art of Queens”) during times when they could not, or would not, communicate directly. Her work references the double, triple, or adjunct meanings inherent in the imagery of objects. What do objects symbolize? Do they mean the same thing to all people?

Alison’s fiber art calls into question the neutrality of any image, word, material or technique. The more we explore the possibility that things are not necessarily what we assume at first glance, the richer our experience of life becomes.
