Alessandra Simmons will be the featured poet at the Dickinson Poetry Series at the Fellowship on Wednesday, June 12th at 7:00 pm. The Dickinson series is named after the Emily Dickinson, the famous American poet and includes a performance by a “featured” poet and then an open mic where poets from the audience have the opportunity to present one of their poems.

Alessandra Simmons is a poet and PhD student at UW Milwaukee in English. From Los Angeles, CA, she’s lived in the Midwest for 10 years, in progressively more northern places, until she landed on Washington Island, where you can’t get much farther north. On the island, Alessandra grows veggies, native plants and cut flowers with her husband at Hoot Blossom Farm, selling to Island restaurants and at the farmers market. She also helped found Gathering Ground, a nonprofit on the island focused on sustainable agriculture education. Her writing is concerned with the intersection of humans and the environment. Not only because she is fascinated by nature’s beauty and systems, but because she wants her son, less than a year old, to have a planet that is inhabitable when he’s 12 years old, 22 years old, and so on. She has poems published in Spillway, The Florida Review, WomenArts Quarterly, and other journals. Find more at AlessandraSimmons.com
