The ninth year of the UUFDC Dickinson Poetry Series opens on April 12, 7 pm at the UU Fellowship. Barbara Larsen, the Door County Poet Laureate for 2011-2013, will be the featured reader. Refreshments will follow the reading.
Barbara Larsen believes in the power and truth of poetry and in the ability to connect with the hearts and minds of readers. Much of her work has been inspired by the beauty in nature around her home on a bluff overlooking Green Bay waters for 30 years. Family memories often find their way into words. Her journal entries and later poems have a philosophical bent.
Active in the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets for many years, she now concentrates on the many activities surrounding poetry in Door County, where she is a member of the Wallace writing group. As Door County Poet Laureate, she worked at building an audience for the appreciation of poetry and encouraging area poets.
Larsen is a prolific poet whose eighth book, Poet’s Nest was published in 2015. She has won a number of awards, including the prestigious Jade Ring from the Wisconsin Writers Association.
On the second Wednesday of every month the Dickinson Poetry Series features a renowned local or regional poet followed by an open mic, providing an opportunity for others to read their poetry. A reception follows affording an opportunity to meet the poets. The Series is named for Emily Dickinson, a prolific poet and philosophically in tune with Unitarian beliefs. The public is welcome and there is no charge. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is located at 10341 Hwy. 42 in north Ephraim. For more information call (920) 854-7559.
