Dickinson Poetry Series presents Judy Roy with a poetry performance themed Reflections and Reminisces from the Boreal Forest.
Roy is a Milwaukee native and has lived in Wisconsin for nearly all of her life. Since her retirement from teaching French and psychology in Marshfield, Wisconsin, she has lived in Baileys Harbor.
Judy wrote her first poem in elementary school and has been writing ever since. She prefers poetry which is accessible, inviting the reader to share the poet’s perceptions and emotions through the use of language which is interesting, imaginative, and evocative.
She studied at the Iowa Writers Workshop and with noted poets Ellen Kort, Marilyn Taylor, and Robin Chapman. She has read her poems at the Wisconsin Book Festival, performances of Midsummer’s Music Festival, and with the Pro Arte Quartet in a presentation of The Seven Last Words of Christ. Her poetry has been published in a number of publications, including Wisconsin People and Ideas, The Peninsula Pulse, the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets’ calendars and Museletters, Free Verse, and Echoes Anthology. Her books include Slightly Off Q, by Roy, June Nirschl, and Nancy Rafal, Two Off Q, a conversation in poetry, by Roy and Nirschl, and Now and Then, collected poems.
On the second Wednesday of every month the Dickinson Poetry Series features a renowned local or regional poet followed by an open mic, providing an opportunity for others to read their poetry. A reception follows affording an opportunity to meet the poets. The Series is named for Emily Dickinson, a prolific poet and philosophically in tune with Unitarian beliefs. The public is welcome and there is no charge.
