Nancy Rafal will take the Dickinson Poetry Series stage at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Wednesday, January 8th at 7 pm. The Dickinson Series is named after Emily Dickinson, the famous American poet and includes a performance by a “featured” poet and then an open-mic where poets from the audience have the opportunity to present one of their poems.

Nancy Rafal has been writing poetry for the last three decades. She is not a “disciplined” writer and writes when the spirit moves her. Nancy’s work has appeared in many issues of the Wisconsin Poets’ Calendar, Hummingbird, and other publications. Her Dickinson reading will be a retrospective of poems that have appeared in the calendars and a few she wished had been selected.

She is a past treasurer for the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets and the Wisconsin Writers Association. She helped initiate the Poetry Trail in Newport State Park in Door County and the Door County Poet Laureate Project both of which are now under the auspices of Write On, Door County.

Nancy spearheaded the construction and painting of a 96 foot long mural in Baileys Harbor honoring the spirit of Lorine Niedecker. Lines from Wintergreen Ridge, a Niedecker poem, are hidden throughout the mural. Ram Rojas, the artist, painted his first mural in Wittenburg, Wisconsin. That town now has over two dozen murals.

Nancy feels she is a poetry advocate and believes that each person is capable of creative expression. “We just need a little prodding and encouragement to pick up the pen and put our thoughts and feelings on paper.”

She has received the Hal Grutzmacher Award in 2010, placed in the WWA’s Jade Ring contest in 2018, and in April 2019 was appointed Poet Laureate of Door County.

About Dickinson Poetry Series: On the second Wednesday of every month the Dickinson Poetry Series features a renowned local or regional poet followed by an open mic, providing an opportunity for others to read their poetry. A reception follows affording an opportunity to meet the poets. The Series is named for Emily Dickinson, a prolific poet and philosophically in tune with Unitarian beliefs. The public is welcome and there is no charge. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is located at 10341 Hwy. 42 in north Ephraim. For more information call (920) 854-7559.
