In the first year of the Emily Dickinson Poetry Series, 2009-2010, a Gibraltar student was a featured reader. The reading was such a success that we felt compelled to encourage more student readers. We established one reading each year just for students and the successes have continued. The audiences have been moved by the depth and poignancy of the student poems.
Lauren Bremer, an English teacher at Gibraltar, teaches, coaches, and inspires the students’ poetry. This year, the ninth in the series, many students have already asked to read: Mason Bauldry, Spencer Berndt, Avalynn Clayton, Ethan Farnham, Kathleen Jackson, Sarah Kifer, Maggie Parzych, Gracie Richards, and Paige Thompson.
Several of these students have read previously in the series and the new readers will insure that the tradition will continue. So, mark your calendars for Valentine’s Day, Wednesday, February 14 at UUFDC to join in an inspiring evening. The reading begins at 7 pm. A post-reading reception provides an opportunity to discuss the poetry.
About Dickinson Poetry Series: On the second Wednesday of every month the Dickinson Poetry Series features a renowned local or regional poet followed by an open mic, providing an opportunity for others to read their poetry. A reception follows affording an opportunity to meet the poets. The Series is named for Emily Dickinson, a prolific poet and philosophically in tune with Unitarian beliefs. The public is welcome and there is no charge. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is located at 10341 Hwy. 42 in north Ephraim. For more information call (920) 854-7559.
