Freedom is a cherished ideal in our country and in our Unitarian Universalist movement. Our fourth principle promotes the free and responsible search for truth and meaning and we can easily see the value in freedom but often look sidelong at the idea of obligation. To whom and what are we obligated in our covenantal communities? How do we balance the pursuit of real freedom for each with our obligation to the whole?
Eileen Wiviott is a candidate for Unitarian Universalist ministry and a student at Meadville Lombard Theological School. She is expecting to graduate in May of 2017 and currently serves as the Ministerial Intern at Countryside Church Unitarian Universalist in Palatine, IL and as the Membership Director at the Unitarian Church of Evanston, IL.
