PFLAG Door County, ADRC/Senior & Community Center, and Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County (UUFDC) have teamed up to offer a second screening of Gen Silent in northern Door County on Thursday, October 8, 6 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County in north Ephraim.
These statistics set the stage: There are almost 38 million LGBT Americans over 65, or 12.6 percent of the population. This will nearly double by 2030. Fifty percent of LGBT elders live alone, compared with 33 percent of the general population. Fifty percent of nursing home workers said their fellow workers would be intolerant of LGBT people.
Gen Silent is the critically acclaimed documentary from filmmaker Stu Maddux that asks six LGBT seniors if they will hide their friends, their spouses, and their entire lives in order to survive in the care system. Their surprising decisions are captured through intimate access to their day-to-day lives over the course of a year. It puts a face on what experts in the film call an epidemic: gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender older people so afraid of discrimination by caregivers or bullying by other seniors that many simply go back into the closet.
Admission is free and no reservation is required. There will be a discussion following the screening.
