When you think of humility what comes to mind – perhaps a devout priest or a pious nun?  According to the third edition of the New Oxford American Dictionary, humility is a noun connoting a modest and low view of one’s own importance; humbleness.  Do you agree?

For me, humility is rich in meaning; in fact, for me it is a key virtue.  The world’s great religions all agree on its importance.  And for us UU’ers, Forrest Church writes in his book The Cathedral of the World: A Universalist Theology:  “In the temple of universalism, two great pillars – awe and humility – flank the dome.” This morning we will think further about humility.

Dick Smythe is an entomologist retired from the research division of the US Forest Service. Throughout his life he has maintained two dominant interests: first, his fascination with the natural world – our non-human environment and endless source of wonder; second, his abiding interest in religion/theology – a subject of continuing education and challenge.
