My message centers on the idea of creating conversations, and public discourse, about issues that Door County residents deal with every day but that people don’t tend to talk about. The issues I have in mind include child care, affordable housing, mental health, alcohol and substance dependency, and seasonal unemployment. Since I moved back to Door County as an adult, I’ve seen just about everyone I know dealing with one or more of these challenges. I think it’s really important that we open up these challenges as real topics of conversation, so that we can begin to address them as a community. That’s why I started Knock, an independent, nonprofit news organization covering Door County, last year. I’d like to focus my message on that idea of how we can start conversations and the necessity of that, and touch on several of the issues I mentioned as well.
