How do two very different peoples/nations, both of whom suffered unbelievable cruelty, mass starvation, homelessness, and a complete lack of any meaningful federal assistance, find a way to demonstrate a remarkable lesson of joint compassion and generosity?  This story is not widely known but its lesson is timeless and is still being demonstrated today.  May we all learn to be similarly compassionate.

Dick Smythe is an entomologist retired from the research division of the US Forest Service. Throughout his life he has maintained two dominant interests: first, his fascination with the natural world – our non-human environment and endless source of wonder; second, his abiding interest in religion/theology – a subject of continuing education and challenge.
