Tony’s sermon this Sunday will examine the development of the notion of hell, from being another word for the grave to the later notion of eternal punishment, and why our UU ancestors rejected eternal punishment as impugning the nature of God. Tony will explore why many people still believe in hell, why UUs don’t (it has something to do with doctrines of human nature), and what UUs can say to those who do.
If you don’t know much about UU history, this sermon will give you a brief overview; it might also be a good one to invite friends to, especially those who don’t know what this UU thing is all about.
Rev. Dr. Tony Larsen recently retired as pastor of Olympia Brown UU Church in Racine. He served this role since 1975 (yes, that’s 42 years and probably a record!). He has been an annual guest speaker at our Fellowship, and we are looking forward to his spring, summer, and fall visits to UUFDC!
