Many of us no doubt realize that our Fellowship gave birth, almost four years ago, to what has become an increasingly well-recognized non-partisan effort to promote understanding and action to address the many challenges presented by global warming—the Climate Change Coalition of Door County (CCCDC).
With the help of many volunteers, including a number of UUers, the CCCDC has developed over the past four years a wide-ranging set of activities and programs. The premier event in May, CCCDC’s Climate Change Forum, features nationally recognized experts on climate and related issues including food security, health impacts, renewable energy sources, and effects on birds, forests and the Great Lakes.
Educational outreach includes monthly speakers, the Climate Corner column in the Peninsula Pulse, radio spots on Door County Daily News, spring tree planting in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy, The Ridges and local schools, Celebrating Earth Week activities between Earth Day and Arbor Day, an annual Climate Science Workshop to introduce teachers to the basics of climate science and provide classroom-ready materials and demonstrations, and community programs jointly sponsored by CCCDC and other local faith groups. The Coalition has recruited over 80 local businesses to sign a national Declaration recognizing the seriousness of climate change and calling for a bold response. A new project, in response to a request from science and technology teachers at Gibraltar and Sturgeon Bay High Schools, is development of a speakers list for their classes.
The Climate Change Coalition is open to all. It is strictly non-partisan and would benefit from any and all additional helpers for one or more of their on-going programs.
CCCDC thanks the members of UU Fellowship for your ongoing encouragement and support. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
