One of the most universal psychological insights comes from Epictetus, the Greek Stoic philosopher of the First Century AD, who said that what really frightens and dismays us is not external events themselves but the way in which we think about them. “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that ain’t so”, mused Mark Twain. Belonging is one of our most profound blessings, to be loved and accepted with all our brokenness. But belonging has a dark side, extreme tribalism which makes a mockery of democracy. We are living in partisan echo chambers, relating more and more only to people who think like us.
The principle of charity seeks to interpret what other people say in the best possible form, rather than in the most offensive way possible, giving the other person the benefit of the doubt.
