Karon Winzenz will host a meeting to discuss Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe on November 4 at her home, starting at 12:30 pm. Achebe tells the story of Okonkwo, an Igbo villager who has worked his way up from humble origins to become a respected leader in his community. But when he commits acts that are against accepted cultural norms, he is exiled. The second part of the book deals with British missionaries who arrive and completely change Ibo lives, governance, and beliefs. Karon will poll the group regarding attendance closer to the date.
On December 2, Lynn Lees will lead a discussion of The End of Your Life Book Club a memoir by Will Schwalbe, based on the time he spent with his mother who had terminal cancer and her death. His mother Mary Anne, a lifelong reader, and Will — editor in chief of a major publishing house — began reading books to discuss when he accompanied her to her chemotherapy sessions. “But just as the books themselves served as excuses for Mary Anne and Will to talk of difficult things — particularly mortality — the book club serves here as an excuse for a loving celebration of a mother by a son” (New York Times, book review, Jan. 4, 2013).
