Despite our belief that we are a religion for this time, the numbers of UU’s in the USA continue to decline. Where have all our children gone? Why can’t we become more racially diverse? What do we do about these issues? In exploring these questions, this sermon investigates why we see the declining numbers we see, how concerned we should be about them, and what can make people want to stay in one of our churches once they find our religion. This, in turn, helps us know why many, including our children, might leave.
Rev. Dr. Bobbie Groth is a UU Community minister who has served victims of violence, interfaith relations, and other issues in the Milwaukee area for over 20 years. Bobbie teaches sociology at Alverno College, has recently retired from the cabinet of the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee after serving that entity since 1994, and provides consulting and guest minister services to congregations. She plays fiddle in a traditional Celtic music band, The Garlic Mustard Pickers, which donates all proceeds to worthy community causes.
